The company FIJI water was founded in 1996 by a Canadian-born man, David Gilmour. The company gets their water from the island of Fiji.Fiji is an island with lush rain forests with dormant volcanoes. The water is filtered by the volcanic rock and as a result of this, minerals and electrolytes are gathered in the water. This is what makes FIJI water so popular. However there are lots of negative impacts of Fiji's water being harvested. A study done in 2008 by BBC shows that one third of the total population that lives in Fiji does not have access to clean drinking water. (2) Other reports state that over half of the Fijian citizens do not have access to clean drinking water. The company drains almost 3.5 million litres a month from the island. It is no wonder that the Fijians do not have access to clean drinking water. (16) The Fijian government gave total access to the owners of FIJI water to take their water while the rest of the country is drowning in poverty, lack of food, lack of water and proper necessities. The government however, protects the company with their military junta. The people of Fiji are suppressed and helpless to helping themselves.. As a result of their water being stolen, Fijians have had outbreaks of typhoid and parasitic infections. (3) While the Fijians suffer, the owners of FIJI water benefit greatly. The owners of FIJI water, Stewart and Lynda Resnick, make 1.5 millions dollars an year. (3) There is an organization called the FIJI Water Foundation. The aim of this foundation is to provide clean water to communities, build educational facilities for children, and provide access to healthcare to underprivileged communities. (10) However, there have been outbreaks of typhoid and other disease related issues to many Fijians so the FIJI Water Foundation has not been upholding their promise. Some villages in Fiji have access to healthcare, however these villages are mainly the more prosperous villages of Fiji. Other villages have had promising starts to healthcare but lost momentum. Once again, the FIJI Water Foundation has not been holding up to their promises. (9)
